The Minnesota Association of Townships (MAT) announces its 2026 Scholarship Program. MAT will award up to five scholarships of $2,000 each to Minnesota high school juniors to promote understanding of township government and its role in local communities.
Eligibility
- Must be a current 11th-grade student enrolled in a Minnesota public, private, or parochial high school, or participating in an approved home-study program.
- Must intend to continue education at a college, university, or vocational school.
- New for 2026: applicants are required to reside in a Minnesota township.
- Applicants may not be the child, stepchild, grandchild, step-grandchild, brother, stepbrother, sister, or stepsister of any MAT Director or MAT staff member.
Required Application Materials (submit all items together in one envelope)
- Completed application form
- Written essay responding to this year’s township-related question (topic concerns roads, infrastructure, and the role of county road engineers)
- Current high school transcript
- One letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or counselor
Essay Guidelines
- Length: 450–500 words
- Typed and double-spaced
- Use critical thinking to address the topic
- Do not identify yourself, your school, your town/city, or any local officials in the essay
