Overview This memorial scholarship, created by Brian Thiele’s family and friends, awards financial support to students who reflect the qualities Brian was known for: participation in varsity and/or club soccer, persistence in reaching personal and academic objectives, resilience in the face of challenges, a competitive drive, leadership, and a strong commitment to community service. Applicants should note that extra application materials are required. About Brian Arthur Thiele Brian Arthur Thiele was born on September 16, 1971, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A 1990 Portage Northern High School graduate, he played on the varsity soccer team for four years. Brian was completing a degree in Logistics Management at Western Michigan University when, at 22 years old, he died in an inline skating accident while interning in Isny, Germany. In addition to playing, Brian devoted much time to coaching—serving one year as head junior varsity coach at Northern, working as an assistant varsity coach there, and coaching several under-16 Premier TKO FC teams. Eligibility and Award Alignment - Enrollment status: Full-time students only - Accepted programs: Associate (2-year), Bachelor’s (4-year), and vocational/trade certification programs - Applicant types: Current undergraduate students and high school seniors Required applicant qualifications - Residency or schooling: Must live in Kalamazoo County or be graduating from (or have graduated from) a high school located in Kalamazoo County. - Financial need: Demonstrated financial need is required. - Soccer participation: Four years of participation on a high school soccer team. - Personal qualities: Evidence of competitive spirit, leadership, and a commitment to giving back to others.
