Albert Shanker College Scholarship Fund
Scholarship Sponsored by United Federation of Teachers
Annually, the United Federation of Teachers takes great pride in granting $1 million in scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies to students from New York City public schools who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. The recipients of these scholarships are a testament to the potential for outstanding achievement within New York City's educational system, thanks to their own diligence and the commitment of the educators who have guided them.
Who is eligible for the undergraduate scholarships?
The scholarship program is exclusively open to seniors from New York City public high schools who are on track to graduate from a vocational, academic, or alternative school, or who will be awarded an equivalency diploma from a public evening school or a New York City Board of Education alternative educational program. Applicants must not only have a strong academic record, but also show leadership within their school and community. Furthermore, all applicants must qualify for and apply for federal financial aid, specifically a Pell Grant.
Who is eligible for the graduate scholarships?
Only those who have previously received the UFT undergraduate college scholarships are considered for the graduate awards. In addition to having a strong academic record, recipients of the graduate scholarships must also exhibit leadership skills and meet certain family income criteria.
What is the selection process for the winners?
An unbiased committee, appointed by the Fund's Director, selects the winners. Roughly two-thirds of the college scholarships are granted based on high school average and class rank. The remaining scholarships are awarded based on recommendations, the applicants' personal statements, their potential, and their academic performance.
How are the scholarship funds disbursed?
For undergraduate scholarships, the Fund sends payments directly to the recipients. Checks, in the amount of $625, are mailed semi-annually to the students' registered addresses, up to a total maximum award of $5,000. For those who win graduate scholarships, payments are made semi-annually directly to the student, upon verification of enrollment.
