2026–2027 Essay Prompt
Title: Addressing Short‑Term Housing Challenges for Interns: Strategies and Solutions in the Current Rental Market
Context: In the present rental environment, many student interns face difficulty securing short-term, affordable, and flexible housing. Factors such as rising rents, limited lease options, and inadequate institutional support can block access to internship opportunities.
In your essay, address the following:
1. Describe the specific housing obstacles interns encounter.
- Discuss issues like lease length and flexibility, cost, scarcity of units in major employment centers, and how these challenges vary by socioeconomic background.
2. Analyze the influence of current rental market trends.
- Consider effects of rising rents, low vacancy rates, shrinking availability of short-term rentals, and other market forces that complicate interns’ housing searches.
3. Examine responsibilities and roles of employers, universities, and housing providers.
- What should each stakeholder do (or be expected to do) to mitigate the problem?
4. Propose practical, implementable solutions.
- Suggest ideas such as alternative housing models, employer-university partnerships, policy changes, or tech platforms that would expand access to short-term, affordable housing for interns. Support your proposals with examples, data, or case studies where relevant.
