Overview
Founded in 2016, the Ramblers Scholarship provides financial assistance to student-athletes pursuing undergraduate study who publicly identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex (LGBTQI), as well as committed straight allies with a demonstrated record of support. Awards are one-time scholarships paid directly to the recipient’s college or university to be applied toward tuition.

Award details
- Each summer up to two recipients will be publicly announced; each award is $2,500.
- Scholarship funds are sent directly to the institution to cover tuition costs.
- The application window is open every year from January 1 through May 1.

Application materials
To apply, submit:
- A completed application form
- Five short essays
- Two letters of recommendation
- A list of relevant honors and extracurricular activities
- Official or unofficial copies of transcripts

Who is eligible
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be an athlete (all sports and athletic pursuits qualify)
- Publicly self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex, or be a demonstrated, committed straight ally
- Be either a graduating high school senior planning to enroll at an accredited U.S. undergraduate college or university, or a currently enrolled U.S. undergraduate student
- Be between 15 and 22 years old, with exact age eligibility depending on the timing of high school graduation

Preferred candidate qualities
The strongest applicants typically:
- Demonstrate clear financial need for tuition support
- Would experience a meaningful impact from receiving the scholarship
- Can clearly describe their academic and career objectives
- Show sustained involvement and passion in extracurricular activities
- Exhibit leadership in academics, athletics, and/or extracurricular pursuits
- Have a realistic likelihood of completing their degree
- Are engaged in community service, volunteer work, or similar civic involvement

Statement of purpose
The Ramblers Scholarship seeks to broaden support for student-athletes who are dedicated to advancing and serving the LGBTQI community. Our goal is to provide financial help that reinforces recipients’ connection to the community and assists them in pursuing their educational and professional goals.
